My daughter has been begging for a Super Hero Cape. And if my son had the language skills to ask for one, I am pretty sure he would beg for one too. However, anytime I consider doing any project that involves fabric, I get anxiety. Fabric usually involves sewing and I have a a brick wall that shoots right now whenever I consider sewing.
I don't sew a lot, and I am not fabulous at it. I can rock a straight line on my sewing machine, preferable with non-stretchy fabrics...but I don't like to get much more complicated then that!
Which is why this NO-SEW SUPER HERO CAPE is perfect for me and any other non-sewers out there!!
(can I get a woot woot if sewing causes you anxiety too!?)
Here is the simple, how-to create a Super Hero cape, never touching a needle or thread:
You Will Need:
- Knit Fabric or Fleece Fabric
- The fabric width (typically 45" or 54") will be the width of the cape
- Buy enough length to be the length of the cape you want.
- 1 yard of ribbon (I prefer grosgrain and I recommend sealing the edge with either fray check or a match.)
- Fabric scissors
- Large safety pin
Note: the type of fabric is very important for this project being a no-sew project! Other types of fabric (like cotton) will fray and this will become a hot mess that you will either throw away or end up hemming the edges. So be sure to get either a type of knit fabric or fleece fabric.
First you will lay your fabric flat on a large surface.
Second, determine how wide your ribbon is and half that width. For example, if your ribbon is 1" in width (width A), you will want to use the measurement of ½" (width A / 2 = width B).
Third, take the fabric and fold it width A down along the top width of the fabric.
Fourth, snip in along the folded edge width B. Continue along the entire folded edge, snipping about every 1"-2", you don't have to be exact.
Unfold the edge and you will see little snips all across the top of your fabric.
Fifth, attach the safety pin to one end of the ribbon and weave the ribbon in and out of the snips.
Sixth, let your little one enjoy their new super hero powers!
This would make a great birthday, holiday or Christmas gift! Also just a fun was to spend a lazy summer afternoon!
Update: The fabric I bought (which was a silky knit) tends to all collect at the back and not drap nicely over the shoulders for very long. I would suggest tacking each side of the ribbon to the end of the cape on either side. This will also prevent your ribbon from pulling through!
