Every holiday I think it would be cute to dress my daughter in a holiday related outfit. But I don’t want to spend a lot of money on it, since she won’t get a ton of use out of it. And I never seem to have any luck finding anything that isn’t over the top. So every holiday passes by and my daughter never gets any holiday related outfits.
For Valentine’s Day, I found a few ideas similar to this one and modified it to make it my own. I think it turned out really cute AND it is subtle enough that my daughter will be able to wear it all summer long if she wants to!
I started off with a really plain shirt and skirt from Target. They were really cheap but gave me a simple base to work with.
Then I cut out my heart shapes out of felt. I cut enough hearts in descending sizes to make a total of (1) three heart shape and (1) two heart shape.
Next I used fray check along all edges of my hearts.
Next I sewed a few beads along the edge of the top of the three heart shape piece of felt.
Then I hand stitched the top heart to the middle heart using matching embroidery thread.
And then I hand stitched the middle heart to the bottom heart using contrasting embroidery thread. I repeated these steps for my two heart shape.
I then sewed both of my heart shapes to the shirt, at slight angles, using contrasting embroidary thread.
Next I decided to do the same hand stitching along the edge of the sleeves in a contrasting color. Didn’t that turn out so cute!
Then, to coordinate the two pieces, I hand stitched along the edge of the skirt pockets in a contrasting thread (it is hard to see in these photos but I used white thread on the pink skirt).
Didn’t this turn out so cute? I am not a sewer so this was quite the undertaking for me, but I think my daughter will like it!
Oh, and to top off the outfit, I had left over beads so I made my daughter a bracelet too!
